Whether you’ve just purchased a log home that’s in need of a face lift, or if you’ve let the routine maintenance on your home lapse, our services can help you bring your home back to life.

Start by cleaning your logs. Pressure washing will remove any accumulated dirt or debris from your logs. Corn Cob Blasting can remove old finishes and paint. It can, also, take off the outer layer of damaged wood caused by weathering and unprotected exposure. Grinding of the log ends can clean up their faces, too, and seal the open pores. Chemical strippers can be used for the most difficult to remove finishes.

After your logs have been cleaned, you can apply the exterior log finish of your choice. We recommend Sashco’s Capture and Cascade system because of their high quality and easy maintenance. We will, however, apply any product you choose.

Older homes may have cement-like mortar chinking between the logs. Over time, the moving and shrinking of the logs forces the mortar to pull away and create gaps for wind, water, and insects to penetrate. We can remove this old style mortar and replace it with new acrylic latex chinking that moves with our logs as it continues to hold its seal. We can also apply this chinking over poorly applied and failing chinking. We prefer to use Sashco’s Log Jam Chinking, but will apply the product of your choice. These chinkings come in a variety of colors for you to choose from.

If your home is a Swedish Cope or milled log style, and has never had a seal between the logs, some gaps may have opened up. The look of the house may lend itself to using a type of caulking to seal it up. These caulkings, including Sashco’s Log Builder or Conceal (textured caulking), come in many colors and we can match one to the color of your logs. The caulking will “disappear” and all you will see is the beauty of the logs without the air leaks.

Log checks or cracks can also be sealed with caulking so that wind and water or insects can not get in through these openings. These seals can be done with a dark brown color that still looks like a check, or in a color that blends with or matches the color of the logs.

Log rot can be a problem for older homes were snow or water has been able to sit and penetrate into the log. In areas were the rot is too bad, we can do a whole log replacement or sometimes just reface the log if the rot has not ruined its structure. PeneTreat, a borate based solution, is a wood preservative and can be sprayed on the logs prior to staining. Impel Rods, which are a solid form of borate, can be inserted into the rot prone areas and will diffuse on the inside of the logs to stop rot and decay.

Any log carpentry work that you can think of can be done. Our log carpenters can re-cut doors and windows that pinch and no longer open correctly. They can install new outside posts or other accents or repair and support existing ones. Firm up a slumping wall, add a deck, or just re-do one.
